Innovative Applique 3 of 3 W/S ~ Bias & Stained Glass

Stained Glass, very much like Celtic and Bias, appliqué , a traditional techneque that uses uniform folded bias strips of fabric. The bias cut allows the fabric to lay flat and curve easily. The intent of this appliqué technique is to create a ‘line’ in between sections of the design shapes as you would to create a curved line to add the lead in-between the glass when you create stained glass. Of course this can be done in various ways using all types of fabrics &/or materials such as; yarns, cords, strips of frayed fabric and plastics. How you apply your materials also gives you options for unique outcomes as you; melt, fray, colour, stuff, couch on…Your imagination will be challenged.

Innovative Applique 2 of 3 W/S ~ Reverse & Shadow Applique

Reverse Appliqué, traditionaly, is a technique of tucking under the edges of a piece of material in order to show another piece of material underneath. Typically created with several layers. The Innovative application that we will explore to create a sample will incorporate layers of felt that you will cut out in your desired design, or one provided.

Shadow Applique is a technique where an appliqué design is overlaid with sheer or translucent fabric or sandwiched between two layers of sheer fabric to create a shadow effect. The traditional and innovative methods are similar, however, it’s bringing in non-traditional materials and methods, such as melting and adding colour or embellishments encourages lots of ioriginal outcomes.

Innovative Applique 1 of 3 W/S ~ Raw Edge ~ 3 techniques

Christina will teach a three - 3.5 hr (EST) virtual workshops to the Etobicoke Quilter’s Guild that will explore five innovative appliqué techniques; Raw Edge, Reverse, Bias , Stained Glass), 3D and Shadow.

Traditional hand applique methods often included freezer paper or templates to help keep the folded edges nice and sharp. The secrets to successful hand appliqué are, smoothly turned edged, sharp points and a tiny, invisible stitch.

Machine appliqué has taken the art of appliqué to another level that ofter doesn’t include smooth turned edges or sharp points. The first of the workshops will cover three different raw edge appliqué techniques; stuffed motif, frayed and applied with program stitches.
